Remembrance Day 2021 marked the 103rd anniversary of the signing of the Armistice between Allied forces and Germany on 11 November 1918, which ended the First World War. Many Australians stop what they are doing exactly at 11 am on the 11 November each year to dedicate one minute silence to remember all those who have died in war, especially the soldiers that died in World War 1. Last Thursday as a school we remembered the fallen and observed a minute silence as a sign of respect and reflected on the bravery of others.
We were all very impressed with the efforts of our swimming team who participated in the Inter School SPSSA Swimming Carnival last Tuesday. Their courage, persistence and determination paid off, with the team coming away placed third in the Division G carnival. Not only were we extremely proud of our student’s participation in the carnival their overall behaviour and sportsmanship was fabulous. Congratulations on being wonderful ambassadors for our school.
Next Wednesday our Grade 3/4 and 5/6 classes will participate in on-line safety sessions (ThinkUKnow) run by Tasmania Police. The sessions will cover information about sharing content online and how students can be share aware. The sessions will also cover what children, see, say and do online and how their interactions online may impact on their safety. If you do not want your child to participate please contact the school.

In Kindergarten we have been practising our concepts of print and letter formation during our interactive writing sessions.
We have been reminiscing on our year in Kindergarten and what we have loved the most. Here are some samples of our fabulous work to share with everyone.
Kitchen/Garden Sustainability Program
As spring is trying to break through the colder days, the garden is beginning to grow some produce for us. The students were busy in Term 3 planting the seeds and watched them grow into seedlings and now into mature vegetables that are ready to harvest. Planting has begun for tomatoes and corn, which will be ready to harvest in Term 1 2022.
In the kitchen the students have been learning how to make a salad from what they can harvest straight from the garden and some have even added noodles for an extra crunch! As a snack the students are making carrot cake balls and they have baked apple muffins earlier in the term.
Division G Swimming Carnival - Tuesday 9 November
On Tuesday 9 November twenty students represented our school at the SPSSA inter primary swimming carnival. The students were wonderful and demonstrated an amazing effort and attitude in their events with many swimming out of their comfort zones.
Throughout the day we had many individual and team successes. Overall we are proud that our team came third overall in Div G. Well done team Herdy!!!
Children's University Graduation - Thursday 11 November
On Thursday last week, Ms Lovell and Ms Burn escorted a group of Children's University students to Sandy Bay to celebrate their graduation. All year students have been working hard outside of school hours to collect stamps for their university passport. Students aim to collect 30 stamps for bronze, 65 stamps for silver and 100 stamps to achieve gold graduation. A celebration at the Tasmania University campus is held at the end of each year in honour of these students.
Well done to all all our students for the extra effort they have put in to achieve graduation. The program will continue next year.
Visit from Surf Life Saving Tasmania
Last Friday afternoon we had a surprise visit from Surf Life Saving Tasmania. Students from 1/2B and 3/4M enjoyed learning about keeping safe in and around Tasmanian beaches and waterways. We would like to thank Surf Life Saving Tasmania for sharing their knowledge with us.
School Banking Update from Commonwealth Bank
For 90 years, our School Banking program has helped children learn about money, reinforced the importance of regular savings and provided structure for parents to support their children to save.
Though the program continues to have strong support from schools, parents and teachers, recent decisions by some state and territory governments because of a review by the corporate regulator mean we are unable to continue providing programs in schools, and we have had to make a difficult decision to close our School Banking program for all government and non-government schools across the country.
Our School Banking program was established in 1931 at a time when having a bank account was not commonplace, and since then we have helped more than 15 million Australians take their first financial steps. This would not have been possible without the wonderful support we have received from schools like yours, including all the parents and volunteers, and for this we are deeply grateful. Thank you.
Even though this is a sad time, School Banking has taught so many young Australians, past and present, the value of money and we believe this should be celebrated. We have created a place for you to share your stories, fondest memories and lessons learnt through the program. To share your story and access our financial education resources, please visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
Even though the CommBank School Banking program will not be returning to your school after this year, you can continue to make deposits into your child’s Youthsaver account through online transfers or at any CommBank branch. If you need further information please phone 132 221 or visit your local CommBank branch.
