Dear Families,
There is an old African proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child”. Over the past few weeks, I have seen many examples that have demonstrated that it takes more than one person to help us achieve our full potential. It takes a village, a community, a street, a school, a teacher, a parent, or carer.
Last week a group of students who have a passion for sport and soccer had the opportunity to attend a match day experience, to watch the Olympia FC Warriors play. This was made possible through the generosity of staff and community members. The Olympia Warriors provided the transport and staff gave up their time on the weekend to supervise and support the students. I would like to extend my thanks to Mr Vandermey, Mr Dand (Chris) and Mr Milne who made this happen for our students.
We have several community and staff members who support our Books for Breakfast program. They come in early, well before the school day starts, to prepare a nourishing breakfast for our students. Thank you for supporting our community Mrs Cooper, Mrs Berechree, Mrs Riley, Mr Bennett, Mr Dand, Mr Jones and Mrs Gregson. It means a lot to us to give our students the best possible start to the day.
Last week we said farewell to Mr Gavin (Ricki) our Garden Specialist. We thank Mr Gavin for maintaining our Kitchen Garden over the past 5 years and providing fantastic learning opportunities and inspiring our budding gardeners. Mr Gavin is taking up a position at Taroona Primary. We wish him all the best at his new school and for the future. Miss Jo Percy will be taking up the Garden Specialist position and we look forward to hearing about more great things happening in the garden.
Next week we welcome back Mrs Roxy Clark who is returning to us from Maternity leave. Mrs Clark will be teaching on the 3/4 P class from Monday to Wednesday and Miss Prior will teach the class on a Thursday and a Friday.

In 1/2R, we have been busy measuring objects around our classroom. We have used paperclips, sticks and blocks as our units to measure the length of our feet, books and much more! We made some fantastic discoveries about measuring length. The students came up with some rules so that our measuring is fair and accurate.
“We measure with units” – Xavier
“The units have to be the same size” – Malayah
“We have to make sure we don’t overlap the units” – Kade
“We have to use the same units” – Shayla
“We don’t leave spaces in between the units” – Caleb
We then went on to measure capacity – that is how much a container can hold. The students were challenged to make a container that would hold exactly ten koala counters. We were surprised to discover that even though all the containers held ten koalas, they all looked so different! Some were tall and skinny; some were short and wide.
On Saturday 28 August a group of 5/6 students were given the opportunity to watch Mr V and his soccer team the Olympia FC Warriors play Riverside in the last rostered match for the season at Olympia's home ground.
Students and families were invited to attend, wearing something blue and got to visit the clubrooms after the match. A special thank you to Mr V, Mr Milne and Mr Dand for supporting students on the day. Also thank you to Mr Moschogianis for driving the St Virgils bus and transporting our students on the day. Mr V's team won the match 4-1. Well done Mr V!!
Exciting News - Our Grade 6 Leavers Tops Have Arrived
Our grade 6 leavers have been excitedly waiting for the arrival of their tops. We are happy to advise that they have finally arrived. The office is accepting a $50 payment which goes towards both the top and leaver's lunch. Students will receive their top and be able to wear it once payment has been received.
Mr Dand and selected students from 5/6 classes have been busy hosting a Masterchef competition on Fridays over the past couple of weeks.
Teachers have been judging the main meals and desserts on taste and presentation. Winners of this competition will be going on an excursion to Drysdale House.
Goodluck!
Recently our Prep/1 class made some daffodils to share with our local residents at Wellington Views as they celebrate Spring time.
