Dear families,
I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the outstanding efforts of both our staff and students for their incredible growth in reading. This year, we have adopted a new approach to reading at Herdsmans Cove and our teachers, teacher assistants, and students have embraced it wholeheartedly.
I continue to be amazed by the growth and skill acquisition of everyone involved. Just this week, a student completed a 1-minute oral reading fluency check with me. During Term 1, they couldn’t read any words correctly in a minute. At the end of Term 2, they could read 48 words per minute. This week, they read 138 words correctly in a minute!
The best part? This isn’t just one student; we’re seeing this kind of growth in every class.
In Week 10, we will be inviting families to celebrate student learning. This forms part of DECYP's assessment and reporting requirements, and we are very excited to share what your child has been learning. Keep an eye out for invites early next week.
Warm regards,
Tobin McColl, Principal

This week in Kitchen Garden classes have been making pizza scrolls. They have been delicious and lots of fun to make! Thank you Kelly.
Grade 7 Transition to JRLF Senior School
On Wednesday a group of our grade 6 cultural leavers attended a transition program at JRLF Senior School. The students made clay echidnas in the Culture Room and were shown around the grade 7 hub and classrooms. They were excited about having a free lunch every day where Paddock to Plate is served in the outside area.
There was a conversation about the School Farm, the different electives on offer next year and how the timetables in high school work. Our students were very respectful, displaying their very best behaviour and did Herdsmans Cove proud.
We have just had a new shipment of skorts delivered for this summer. Price will be $25.00. We are also waiting to receive a new shipment of navy blue pants for boys in the coming weeks.
At East Derwent Little Athletics Centre, we are excited for the 2024/ 2025 Little Athletics season and we want to see you!
