5/6 Balhatchet News

When we were in deep winter, the 5/6 first looked at ice. We explored how to get a grip on it by designing shoe soles

that had enough friction to withstand an icy slope without slipping. We also examined how to accelerate ice melting by

using salt.  For the second part of this term we have been investigating volcanoes and experimenting with viscosity by

modelling how lava flows. Look at our stunning volcanoes and our rather sticky lava flow models.

Lava with high viscosity moves slowly. Ethan is experimenting with his medium viscosity model of lava. The low

viscosity model shows quickly spreading lava. The viscosity of the lava determines the shape of the volcano formed.
